Punta Gorda Airport

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

A lot of people were disappointed when Skybus airlines ceased doing business earlier this year.  That being said, when 120,000 passengers passed through our little airport in four short months we proved there is demand for a passenger airline service in Charlotte County.  Well, the good news is that they just announced that Direct Air, based out of South Carolina, will start flying into Punta Gorda on November 22nd, 2008. They will start with service to Massachusetts, New York and South Carolina; and soon announce service to 3 additional locations.  I will let you know as soon as those new locations are announced.  Beyond the convenience that this offers our local residents and visitors, it will also help with economic development for our Airport Authority.

Punta Gorda Skyline

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

For those of you who have visited Punta Gorda recently, I think you will agree that we have a lot of development going on in our downtown.  It really is quite exiting.  Two new buildings are near completion and another has just begun development.

The projects on the home stretch are the Sunloft Center and the Wyvern Hotel. The Wyvern Hotel is located on E Retta Esplanade and US41 at the base of the northbound 41 bridge. Set to open in late Fall of 2008, the Wyvern is a positive addition to the Laishley Marina landscape.

As for the Sunloft Center, if you haven’t seen this building in person the pictures don’t do it justice.  Owner Franz Hartl and architect Bill Pansari have made this building, the Sunloft Center, with its mix of façade styles,  very different than your typical downtown office building.  Once completed, this will really be an asset to our downtown.

The project just starting is the ground breaking of the much talked about Sheraton Four Points Hotel.  This will be part of Harbor Yacht Club which will front on our downtown waterfront.  Many of you will remember that this is where the Holiday Inn (and Howard Johnson’s) used to be.  An important part of this project is that our city negotiated an irrevocable easement that will become part of a public promenade along our waterfront.  Our city officials have long envisioned a pedestrian walkway along our waterfront and this was one of the pieces needed to make it a reality.
