Punta Gorda Remembers Charley

Honoring the Community that Survived & Thrived

Honoring the Community that Survived & Thrived

As Punta Gorda prepares to mark the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Charley, the St. Petersburg Times published a nice article on Punta Gorda comparing then and now. It seems like more than 5 yrs have passed to those of us who were here on that fateful day in August 2004. However, the changes and improvements that have happened in the aftermath of that category 4 storm leave many to say that hurricanes really are nature’s loofah. Scrubbing away the old and unsightly and bringing out the true beauty of  this quaint, boating town nestled on the banks of Charlotte Harbor. Don’t get me wrong, it was very difficult in the weeks and months that followed the storm but we made it through. But, those dark days feel like an eternity ago.

From a real estate perspective, Hurricane Charley did two things: First it gave the community national attention. Secondly, it gave almost all of the houses in Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles a facelift (i.e. new roof, exterior paint and pool cage). We affectionately called that the ‘PGI package’. Of course, many people faced more repairs than those three but overall the community looks very good with lots of curb appeal.
